Congratulations to Revved UP CrossFit Member of the Month, Dave Spencer!!

Tell us a little about yourself.

dave spencer

I live in Winfield, WV.  I have for a little over 23 years.  I am married to my wife Bev.  I have two daughters, Mel who lives in Louisville and Kim who resides with us with her two children, Peyton 9 and Avery 4.

What is your most memorable CrossFit experience?

Doing a pull up (kip) for the first time. I could never accomplish a pull up even in high school and now at 67 I’m able to string several together on a good day.

Why did you try CrossFit?

It was recommended to me after I completed my PT rehab in 2010. I had fallen and broken both bones in both legs just below both knees. One didn’t heal well and ended up with a total knee replacement in November of that same year. I started by walking out back and watching the 8:30 group to see if I could handle the program.  I finally got braver and the ladies and gentlemen were gracious to accept and encourage me.

What has been your biggest challenge or improvement?

My biggest challenge is mentally getting through the workout. My biggest improvement have been the toes to bar exercise.  When I first started I could barely hang on the bar but now I can do the exercise. I am able to do a hand stand and walk along the wall, which surprised me because all of my strength is in my legs and lower body.  Before Revved Up CrossFit I didn’t have much upper body strength.

What is your favorite workout?

 Anything that doesn’t include burpees

What advice would you give to a new member?

Pay attention to the quality instructors we have. They will teach you how to do things right and not get hurt. Take it slow and build your confidence. If you get one today you can shoot for two tomorrow. Always remember that we all have issues, that’s why we’re here. No one is perfect at all of this and we are all trying to get better and do more for our long term fitness and health. “WE” will support you in your efforts, you just have to show up and try.
